Researchers´ Profiles - Brian Saylor

Brian Saylor, PhD, MPH retires in 2007 as Director of the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, a Masters of Public Health from the University of Michigan, and a Doctorate in Health Policy from the Heller School at Brandeis University, where he was a Pew Health Policy Scholar.

Dr. Saylor has been active in Alaskan health affairs since 1974. He became interested in health care planning and policy as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia in the early 1970s. Since then, Dr. Saylor has been a health systems planner, staff for the Alaska State Legislature, University research faculty, a health care administrator, and a Deputy Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. He served as the Administrator of the Alaska Psychiatric Institute.

Saylor teaches an introductory course in health sciences, health administration, social research, evaluation research, public finance, and public health policy. He helped to develop the University of Alaska Anchorage Masters of Public Health Program. In addition, he served on the APHA Executive Board of the American Public Health Association and is a current board member of the Alaska affiliate.
