Arja Rautio (MD, PhD) is a research professor and director of the Centre for Arctic Medicine in the Thule Institute (University of Oulu). She is a docent in pharmacology and toxicology and a registered toxicologist (EUROTOX), and has worked as a researcher and teacher at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (UOulu) and as a private doctor in the field of occupational health care (Occupational Health Clinic of Nokia Co). When working at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology her main research area was clinical pharmacology and toxicology. Since 2006, the focus areas of her research are environmental toxicology and arctic and environmental health. At the moment she is leading the PhD graduate school, research programme and international joint master’s programme of Circumpolar Health and Well-being, coordinated by the Centre and the thematic network of Arctic Medicine in the University of Arctic. She has published over 70 pre-reviewed original and review articles, also studies concerning education and the mistreatment (including aspects of gender, violence and sexual harassment). She is a member of Arctic Monitoring and Assesment Programme (AMAP) - Human Health group. On national level she has influenced the development and assessment of national educational work as a member of the committee for selecting Centres of excellence and the planning and implementation of graduate schooling.
