Researchers´ Profiles - Pamela Orr

Dr. Pamela Orr graduated in Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1978. After internship she worked for a year as a Emergency Room Physician before meeting Dr. J.A.Hildes and joining his Northern Medical Unit at the University of Manitoba in 1980. She worked as a primary care physician in Northern Manitoba and the Northwest Territories (primarily in Rankin Inlet, which is now part of Nunavut) until 1984. She went on to complete specialty training in Internal Medicine (1988), Infectious Diseases (1989) and a Masters degree in Community Health Sciences (1994).

She is presently a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Medical Microbiology, and Associate Professor of Community Health Sciences, at the University of Manitoba. She is Interim Director of Tuberculosis Control for the Province of Manitoba, and is Chair of the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee for the Department of Medicine. She is a consultant to the J.A. Hildes Northern Medical Unit. Her activities involve clinical care, teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and research.

Her research focuses on the epidemiology of infectious and chronic diseases, primarily among Aboriginal populations, viral vaccine and therapeutic trials, and issues of health care delivery in remote regions.

Dr. Orr is a member, and former treasurer, of the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health. She is currently a member-at-large for the Executive Committee of the International Union for Circumpolar Health. She is a Scientific Editor of the International Journal for Circumpolar Health. She is a consultant to the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR), and has served as an advisor for them. Dr. Orr is a member of the Canadian National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

Dr. Orr has served as a consultant to the World Health Association (Special Programme for Research on Human Reproduction), the University of Laos/Health Frontiers Program, and the Albert Schweitzer Institute.
