Dr. Neil Murphy’s areas of research interest include emerging diabetes among cultures in transition, gestational diabetes, fetal ultrasound biometry, and Arctic Native birth weights.
Dr. Murphy is currently a member of the medical staff at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, USA. Dr. Murphy is board certified in both Obstetrics/Gynecology and Family Medicine.
Dr. Murphy has served as the President of the International Union for Circumpolar Health (IUCH) from 2003-2006, and had served as Vice President of the IUCH from 2000 - 2003.
Dr. Murphy had previously served as an IUCH Council member from 1998- 2000.
Dr. Murphy was the President of the American Society for Circumpolar Health (ASCH) 2000- 2008. Neil was previously the President Elect and Vice President of the American Society for Circumpolar Health from 1995 -2000.
Neil is the current Treasurer of the Albrecht-Milan Foundation – a Foundation for the improvement of Circumpolar education.
Dr. Murphy was a Scientific Editor of the International Journal of Circumpolar Health from 2000 - 2006.
Dr. Murphy has been active in the International Congresses on Circumpolar Health (ICCH) since 1987. Most recently, Dr. Murphy was the co-Chairman of ICCH13 in Novosibirsk, Siberia and the co-Editor of the ICCH13 Proceedings.
Dr. Murphy served as on the Scientific Program and the Planning Committees for the 10th International Congress on Circumpolar Health (ICCH) in Anchorage. Neil had been on the International Planning Committee for ICCH 11 and ICCH12 and session chairman on several occasions.
Neil had worked in the Indian Health Service as a Family Physician at the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital in Bethel from 1985-87 and the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka from 1987-90. Neil has been practicing Obstetrics /Gynecology at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska since 1993.
Dr. Murphy served as the national Chief Clinical Consultant in Obstetrics-Gynecology for the US Indian Health Service from 2000 -2008.
Neil originally came to the sub-arctic in 1975 as a college student at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He majored in Northern Studies, which was an interdisciplinary degree program on the culture, history, geography, politics, language, and anthropology of the North. Neil subsequently attended his first year of medical school in Fairbanks as a member of the WAMI [Washington-Alaska-Montana-Idaho] long distance medical school program with the University of Washington in Seattle. In many respects his work with the circumpolar health movement is just an extension of those endeavors in the 1970’s.
