Researchers´ Profiles - Peter Bjerregaard

Peter Bjerregaard is Professor of Arctic Medicine at the National Institute of Public Health, Copenhagen, Denmark (since 1996) and Advisor to the Home Rule Government of Greenland. He graduated in medicine from University of Copenhagen in 1972 and served as District Medical Officer in Upernavik, Greenland during 1978-80. He was Senior advisor on the Expanded Programme on Immunizations to the Kenyan Ministry of Health in Nairobi during 1985-89.

He has been actively engaged in epidemiological research in Greenland and was principal investigator of several large population surveys and other research projects. He is a member of the Greenland Medical Research Council, former chairman of the Danish/Greenlandic Society for Circumpolar Health, and President of the International Union for Circumpolar Health (2000-2003), and scientific editor of the International Journal for Circumpolar Health. He has published more than 90 monographs and papers in peer-reviewed journals, predominantly on circumpolar health. His current research interests include cardiovascular disease and diabetes among the Inuit.
